Galena
is the largest city in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, situated in the upper northwest corner of the state. The city has a population of approximately 3,400 residents and is known for its historical architecture, golf and ski resorts. Galena was the home of Ulysses S. Grant, American Civil War General and 18th President of the U.S. Today, Grants home is a popular tourist attraction. Several other notables lived in Galena, including eight other U.S. Generals, writer Herman Melville and explorer Frederick Schwatka. Eighty-five percent of the structures in Galena are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Old Market House State Historic Site, built in 1845 and today a museum of local social history. Galenas downtown Main Street is lined with many gift shops and restaurants and also a local winery. The region is home to several beautiful golf courses, ski resorts and full service spas. Jo Daviess Countys landscape is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as downhill skiing and snowboarding. Other things to do include horse-drawn sleigh rides, relaxing in one of several bed and breakfast inns or taking a guided nature tour of bald eagle wintering sites. The area also boasts a large number of artists and craftspeople with many art galleries, studios and museums open to the public.

North Central Illinois has four clearly defined seasons with very warm summers and cold winters. July is usually the hottest month and January is the coldest. In winter, cold air masses from Canada bring bitterly cold temperatures to the region. The area is prone to snowstorms and blizzards are frequent winter occurrences. The area averages 36 inches of snowfall in a normal winter, but greater amounts are possible. Northern Illinois also experiences violent thunderstorms during the months of March, April, May and June. Other severe weather events, such as hail and strong winds are common in these storms. Flooding in the region can also be a problem. Autumn is often the best time of year in northern Illinois with sunny, mild days and cool nights that are perfect for fall color tours and other activities.
